Steven Smith of Oval Car Research made the biggest mistake of his life by paying for two engines up front and lost everything. He lost his money, his engines, and his dream.

Triad Racing Technologies — engine operation, 2018. Triad made the strategic decision to exit the race-engine-building business and hired Gordon Brothers to sell the assets of its North Carolina engine shop. This was a substantial NASCAR operation: its engines had competed in the Cup, Xfinity and Truck series, and the sale included CNC machinery, R&D equipment, complete 800-plus-horsepower engines and engine-parts inventory. Triad continued other racing-related operations, so again, this was an engine-business exit rather than the entire company disappearing.
